Décolletage Vase |
Woman EmergingShortly after I became a potter, I noticed that many of my colleagues tended to create pieces somewhat shaped like themselves. Those who were tall and slim, generally preferred to make pottery in these dimensions. The work of the heavier-set potters was frequently more wide than tall. I wondered whether each time we sat down at the wheel, we were recreating ourselves, in one way or another. One day, while working on the “neck” of a vase, it reminded me of the neck and shoulders of a woman. I opened the neckline, so she could wear flowers in her bosom, and named the piece “Décolletage,” a title nobody could spell and few could define. That was the beginning of a line of vases I call "Woman Emerging", which has evolved in several directions during the past decade.
